Flaunt Your Colors! 8 Creative Ideas for What to Wear to Pride

Are you going to a gay pride parade and need help choosing the right outfit? If so, click here for some fresh ideas on what to wear to pride.

It’s the most wonderful time of the year! A celebration that's even more fabulous and sparkly than Christmas – Pride!

Most cities now have a Pride parade, and for many they are a calendar highlight. A celebration of diversity, unity and the progress of the LGBT+ rights struggle.

As well as being a political statement, Pride is also an opportunity to go all out with the party vibes. If it’s your first Pride, you may be wondering what the dress code is (hint: anything goes). Or you might be planning to make an even bigger impact with your pride parade outfit this year. Either way, we’ve got you covered. Read on for 8 creative ideas for what to wear to Pride.

1. Flying the Colours

When you think of pride, what’s the first thing that comes to mind? Rainbow Pride flags of course!

The Pride flag is a universal symbol of LGBT+ rights and inclusion. What better way to get in the pride spirit than to be a walking, dancing embodiment of this message?!

You could opt for a head to toe rainbow scale (red at the head, violet at the feet, obvs). Or cut a hole in a flag and make a poncho. At least there won’t be any doubt that you could have accidentally attended the wrong parade.

2. Rainbow Accessories

Pride parades and parties are not known for their subtlety. However, if you would prefer to maintain a certain degree of sophistication whilst still flying the colors, you need some accessories.

You can get pretty much anything with a pride rainbow on these days, from bow ties to fanny packs. There’s no need to compromise your signature style, just add a little nod to the cause.

Don’t forget your babies and furbabies – Pride is for all the family to enjoy! Any pet will look fabulous on the parade in a mini rainbow cape or with a rainbow leash.

Meanwhile, small humans will probably love the opportunity to don a little face paint and glitter. Speaking of which...

3. Facepaint, Makeup and Glitter Galore

If there was ever an occasion to get creative with the glitter, makeup and paints – Pride is it! From classic rainbow facepaint to glitter beards – too much is never enough. Just know that you will be finding sparkles for months to come…

If you’re not sure where to begin, enlist the help of a skilled friend, or maybe try a youtube tutorial!

Maybe this is the year to try drag for the first time, in which case you’ll need to practice your contouring. Either way, there’s no right or wrong, express yourself and have fun!

4. Get Political

There’s nothing like a little camp satire to get the party started, right? Regardless of your personal leanings, Pride is most definitely political.

From its roots in the Stonewall riots to present-day campaigns to include trans and non-binary rights. This is a time to be passionate about your beliefs!

It could also be the perfect time to channel your favorite (or least favorite) politician. You’re bound to be seen, so spread the message you want to share!

5. Be an Icon

Pride’s the ideal day to present yourself as whoever was your icon growing up (or now!). Our role models can have a huge impact on our lives – especially if they have qualities that we aspire to have.

Pride as about celebrating our differences, as well as what connects us all. Whether you grew up loving Madonna, getting lost in Harry Potter, or even immersed in Pokemon!

Paying homage to an icon of yours through costume is a great way to present that side of yourself and the qualities that you share with them, and wish to celebrate.

6. Lycra, Spandex and Sequins

If it would have looked at home on the set of Dynasty, it will look perfect at Pride. Spandex, lycra, leotards, anything that celebrates your body – whatever your size or shape!

If you’re planning to throw some shapes, you’ll need to be able to move freely, so anything stretchy will be your best friend. Throw in some sequins, rhinestones or studs and you’re good to go.

7. Headwear

Baseball caps, Stetsons, full-on Carmen Miranda fruit bowl. Sometimes a hat can make a much bigger statement than a full outfit. If you want to be easily identified in the crowd, a little extra height may help. If you’re going to be outdoors all day then a little protection from the sun could also be a bonus.

8. What to Wear to Pride - Whatever the Heck You Want!

Pride is about celebrating the freedom to be yourself. There’s no right or wrong way to do that! If you want to wear your old comfy t-shirt, go for it! If you feel better in a top hat and tails – no-one can tell you otherwise! Diversity, individuality, and inclusion are the only themes you really need to worry about. Anything goes at Pride, as long as you’re doing ‘you’!

The Bottom Line

We hope you enjoyed this guide of what to wear to pride! Of course, these are just a few of the many ways in which you can celebrate the day. The bottom line is that anything goes – just express yourself and have fun!
